There was an excellent turnout for the four events of the Waterford Mini-Congress, organised by John Phelan and directed by John and Diarmuid Reddan. The winners were:

  • Friday: Master/Intermediate A – Paul Worswick & LizAnn O’Reilly
  • Friday: Intermediate B/Novice – Michelle Hickey & Paula Oliver
  • Saturday: Master/Intermediate A – Peter Finnegan & Liam McKay
  • Saturday: Intermediate B/Novice – Cora Ryan & Jean Hennebry

And in the Camrose Trophy, the Irish team had a very solid first weekend, winning four of their five matches to lie second in the standings to England (which was the only match they lost). England also lost one match, to Northern Ireland, so the English lead essentially derives from the fact that their four wins were by higher margins than Ireland’s four.

So there is all to play for in the second weekend of the event, scheduled for Scotland on 4-6 March, where we will be represented again by Tom Hanlon & Tommy Garvey, Adam Mesbur & Nick FitzGibbon, and Mark Moran & John Carroll, with NPC Grainne Barton. Of course, it is possible that the second weekend will also be played online rather than live; we will keep members posted on developments. And you’ll find a two brief analyses of the first weekend’s results and some of the hands by the dynamic duo of Thomas MacCormac and Eamon Galligan here and here.
