Many congratulations to John Comyn, who published his first bridge column fifty years ago this Sunday, and has written them continuously ever since. John was honest enough to confide in us that this is not in fact a world record, but it is a very significant achievement nonetheless. We had hoped to mark the occasion in person at the Master Pairs, but, like so many celebrations these days, it will have to be done virtually for the moment.
You may not have agreed with every opinion that John has expressed over the fifty years, but there is no doubt that his pieces were always forthright, and frequently debate-provoking, and that, both as a journalist and in other respects, John has done Irish bridge some service over his long involvement in the game. We hope that he has many more columns in him, and that he will come up with something special this Sunday to mark the anniversary. His first column was published on 12 December 1971. Well done John!
